Word of Mouth
Dear Sarah,

Word of Mouth is the newsletter of the Maine Oral Health Coalition. We welcome your comments and invite your ideas for content.
Name Change
There is more to improving oral health than dental care and providing access. In recognition of this the Maine Dental Access Coalition is now the Maine Oral Health Coalition. We remain committed to improving access, and also to improving oral health care quality, care delivery, and care coverage.
UNE Dental School Opens
dental school opens The first dental school in Northern New England opened this month in Portland. The inaugural class of 64 includes 24 students from Maine, representing 11 counties and more than 20 towns. There are also five students from New Hampshire, four from Vermont and other students representing 16 states in addition to Canada.  ";We will implement one of the most robust community education programs available anywhere with a focus in the fourth year on extensive clinical experience in a distributed, community-based clinical learning environment across northern New England"; said UNE College of Dental Medicine, and former MOHC Governing Council member, Dean James Koelbl.
National Brush Day

First National Brush Day

With Halloween just around the corner, the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives

are gearing up for the first-ever National Brush Day on November 1, 2013. The day after Halloween is a perfect time to remind parents about the importance of making sure their kids brush for 2 minutes, twice a day - every day of the year. To make the biggest splash possible, the Partnership has engaged with the crowd-speaking platform Thunderclap to create a wave of attention for National Brush Day at noon on November 1. From now until then, they are encouraging as  many people as possible to sign up through the platform to release a tweet and/or Facebook post of support. All it takes is one click! Thunderclap will then trigger everyone's posts to be released simultaneously on National Brush Day, creating a virtual flashmob of support. In addition to signing up here,
please use the promotional messaging provided at
http://thndr.it/GWA3wf  to encourage your networks to sign up for the Thunderclap National Brush Day pledge! (Pledge: ";It's National Brush Day! I pledged to help keep kids' mouths healthy by brushing #2min2x a day! #NatlBrushDay";)

HPV and Poor Oral Health

Poor oral hygiene may have detrimental health effects beyond cavities and gum disease -- a new study links it with an increased risk of oral human papillomavirus (HPV).

The new research, published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, shows that poor oral health is associated with a 56 percent higher oral HPV prevalence, for more read on.

Increase in hospitalizations and ER admissions due to dental infections
The Journal of Endodontics article looks at the rising rate of dental infections and concludes that  ";a lack of preventative dental care, dental treatment in a dental clinic setting, and oral health education must be considered."; in explaining this rise, more here. There is also a striking graph from the MMWR on dental related ED visits here.

The conference presentations from last weeks conference, All One Body: Creating Optimal Health Outcomes can be found in the Resources
